EET has a movie review of 300, the epic movie which is the “ferocious retelling of the Battle of Thermopylae.”

“Said battle saw a mere 300 Spartans (hence the title) hold off an assault by King of Kings Xerxes’ (Rodrigo Santoro – TV’s Lost ) insurmountable Persian army long enough to inspire and unite all of Greece against the invading forces.”

“Led from the front by a gloriously OTT Gerard Butler ( The Phantom of the Opera ) as King Leonidas – complete with ridiculous beard and instantly quotable growled dialogue – the Spartan cast all fill out their augmented, amped-up, buff bodies admirably. Notables are David Wenham ( The Lord of the Rings ) as narrator, Dilios and Michael Fassbender (in his feature debut) as young buck Stelios.”

Epoch Times has a report from Cat Rooney, its Kansas City staff, about the difficulty of rebuilding and recovery in New Orleans, seventeen months after Katrina.

“Seventeen months after Hurricane Katrina, Mike Collins from California saw first-hand the impact of the storm on neighborhoods in New Orleans through a Grey Line bus tour. “It looks like a holocaust,” said Collins. “It is really sad.”"

“Some residents are personally experiencing the difficulty of rebuilding, even with the know-how and the necessary tools. After fighting for more than a year with her insurance company and trying to find contractors and supplies the restoration of Betsy Gleckler’s house is almost complete.”

“For some residents, it appears that creative preventive means helps to reduce the risk of returning to New Orleans.”

OK, I admit – this is old news at this point, but I thought that this EET arcticle analyzing the Sirius-XM merger shed some light on the state of the industry and what it will do for the budding satellite radio business:

“The companies claimed a win-win situation for stockholders, consumers and retailers alike. They promised to narrow the competitive gap between satellite radio services and broadcasters.

“The proposed merger will be a tax-free, all-stock combination. Each XM shareholder will get 4.6 shares of Sirius for each XM share, resulting in 50 percent ownership apiece for existing Sirius and XM shareholders.

“The merger between these two companies does not bode well for consumers, but makes good sense from a business point of view, suggest professors Peter Fader and Gerald Faulhaber of the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania during an interview with KW.”

The Epoch Times has a story from Aurelien Girard, one of their French reporters, about how Chirac will not run for president again:

“It did not come as a surprise: On Sunday evening, French President Jacques Chirac made an announcement—carried on all French TV channels—that he would not be a presidential candidate for a third time.

“Notably enough, President Chirac refused to express any support to right-wing presidential candidate and Minister of Interior Nicolas Sarkozy, and moreover expressed opinions markedly different from those of Mr. Sarkozy.”

The Forbes’ billionaires has grown to almost 1000 strong. This is the most international billionaires’ list ever, with more billionaires from India and Europe. The no. 3 on the list is Carlos Slim from Mexico, whose wealth has swelled from $19 billion to $49 billion due to his telecom companies.

“Microsoft founder Bill Gates is still holding on to top spot with a personal worth of $56 billion. Close friend and finance investment wizard Warren Buffet is a close second with $52 billion.

While No.1 and No.2 were from the US, the three remaining slots in the Top 5 belonged to corporate leaders in Mexico, Sweden and India. Carlos Slim Helu, Mexican industrialist in charge of several telecom giants, was No. 3 with $49 billion.”

Chinese Communist Party Supremo Supports Darfur Genocide March 8, 2007

Epoch Times reports that Chinese Communist Boss Hu Jintao is supporting the Darfur genocide – should be no surprise really, given that the CCP supremo has constantly shielded the Sudanese bosses from UN sanctions and invested more in the region.

But the article does cover a lot of ground. Here are some quotes:

“Hu actually went to Sudan to reward the Sudanese president who advocates genocide and promised to help him build a presidential palace. Washington Post columnist Sebastian Mallaby wrote a column on Feb. 5 titled “A Palace for Sudan—China’s No-Strings Aid Undermines the West.” In this article, Mallaby considered that it wasn’t coincidental that Hu agreed to finance a palace for the Sudanese president since, in recent years, China had never agreed to build a presidential palace for any country. Hence the decision to choose Sudan was a deliberate act against the Western world.”

“China even plans to double its aid to African countries in the next three years, offering them $3 billion in low-interest loans and $2 billion in export credits. Western critics say China is throwing its silver dollars into Africa with total disregard of the fact that 600 million people in China continue to earn less than $2 a day and 5 percent of the Chinese population (60 million) still live below the U.N.’s poverty line.”
